North of Moldova kayaking & sleep in local’s houses -4 days

Route Highlights

The tour starts by picking up the participants in Chisinau, where from participants are transported up the river to Sanatauca or Japca monastery. We will stay overnight in a unique place of Moldova, where the Silk Road was going north and east. Vadul Rascov for centuries was the border village, where trading between larger regions was made. This is one of the reasons why few hundreds years ago about 90% of population of Vadul Rascov were Jewish people. Before the electric dump in Dubasari was built in 1955, here was unique place where you could do fording over the river without go off the horse.

Just across the river, there is established the Rascov village (it is in Transnistria, we do not go there) with less than 2.000 habitants and churches with 3 different religions: Synagogue, Orthodox & Catholic churches. From Dacian language, Rascov means pocket of money, which would mean you have to leave some money here.
Some streets in the center of the village are still stone-made for hundreds of years ago. Just to compare, in Moldova’s capital Chisinau at that time, there were no stone-made streets.

Vadul-Rascov village is located about 160 km from Chisinau, and the last 50 km of the road are challenging.  Depending on the group decision route could be shortened by starting from Japca Monastery or starting in Sanatauca + 7 km.  Route goes all the way down the river through Șoldanesti district, and the team will stay overnight in authentic rural houses in the same garden with locals.

After Vadul Rascov,  the group will be going down the river to Tarasova village. From Socola, which is part of  Vadul Rascov  to Tarasova there is no direct road for cars. Beetween these 2 villages, we will find one of the  most beautiful nature reservation in Moldova: Poiana Curatura. We will have a 2 hours hiking excursion around these places. Both sides of the river have rocks with up to 150 meters high.

The second stay overnight is planned in Tarasova where you will have opportunity to learn cooking traditional Moldovan food in the oven.

Third day  we will be kayaking between Tarasova and Rezina. In this region, the river gets a bit larger and the flow speed is reducing. River goes through many villages, on both banks of the river. We will stay overnight in Țipova, there will be organized transfer from Rezina to Țipova. Before moving to Tipova, we will visit Saharna Monastery, and take a bath in a very cold spring. Local believes say if you dive 7 times in the ice-water – for one year you will not get sick.

The 4th day starts in Saharna and goes all the way to Lalova, passing Țipova from the river side. The cave monastery from 13th century is best seen from the river side. This part of the river has multiple Swan families living around.

Kayaks

We use best proven kayaks for multiple days tours, created in soviet time, and dressed in high quality PVC skin. Kayaks are stable and difficult to overturn, which makes it safe to go for those who can’t swim and easily kids onboard.

Before the group starts the instructions are done and each participant is trained:

  • how to get in the kayak;
  • how to get out;
  • how to pedal correctly;
  • how to turn left-right;
  • rules on who is sitting in the back and in the front;
  • how to stop and park the kayak;
  • other

Each participants carry their kayak from the trailer to river (10 meters).

After the instructions each participant signs as being responsible for himself and the other participants in his(her) boat;

There is absolutely no risk for people who can’t swim. In 4 years we have never had a case when the kayaks would to overturn. The professional life wests are keeping the participants absolutely safe.

More details you can find in section about our fleet.

Environmental & Social Responsibility

We feel responsible for the clean nature around us. And always give some extra bags to each tour participants. The main rule – to leave less garbage in the place we go through.

The great thing about kayaking is we can visit remote hard to reach beaches that few people visit. At first glance many of these beaches look pristine,  but on closer examination traces of civilization can often be found in the plastic, styrofoam, and garbage that floats in on the tides.

When we find garbage we pack out what we can in our kayaks, especially styrofoam as it can break down into tiny prices that are next to impossible to collect if left in the elements. On our base camp tours our kayaks are not heavily packed so there is lots of room and on our explorer tours we create more room in our kayaks as the trip progresses and we eat through our supplies.

When unable to pack out items in our kayaks we will collect garbage  and securely pile it above the tide line and notify our representatives to pick it up.
